You spent $500 on your collection. You are spending $0 on protecting it. That is a problem. UV damage, dust accumulation, and humidity are silently destroying your figures right now. Here is how to stop it.
The 3 Enemies of Designer Toys
1. UV Light
Direct sunlight fades paint within 3-6 months. Even indirect light causes gradual yellowing of white surfaces. Solutions:
- Display away from windows
- Use UV-filtering glass or acrylic cases ($50-150)
- Apply UV-blocking window film to the room ($30 for a full window)
- LED display lights are safe — they emit minimal UV
2. Dust
Dust is abrasive. It scratches paint when you try to wipe it off. Prevention is better than cleaning:
- Glass or acrylic display cases (the single best investment)
- If open-shelf: dust weekly with a soft makeup brush, never a cloth
- For plush: use a lint roller, never water
- Compressed air cans work for hard-to-reach spots
3. Humidity
Keep humidity between 40-60%. Below 40% cracks paint and dries out plush. Above 60% risks mold on fabric and adhesive failure on vinyl.
- A $25 hygrometer tells you where you stand
- Silica gel packets in display cases for humid climates
- Never store in basements, attics, or garages
Cleaning Guide by Material
- Vinyl figures: Damp microfiber cloth, no chemicals. For stubborn marks, a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
- Plush: Spot clean only. Damp cloth with mild soap. Never machine wash — it destroys stuffing distribution and can damage embroidery.
- Resin/cold-cast: Dry dusting only. These materials are porous and absorb liquids.
